Transformer: Power versus Distribution

A transformer is a type of electrical component that transfers energy from one circuit to another. It is made out of coils, producing a varying magnetic flux, and through Faraday's law, produces an electromotive force. Overall, a transformer performs different tasks. First, the transfer of electrical energy from one circuit to another by electromagnetic induction. Next, the capacity to transfer electrical power without changing frequency.

Transformers, like every other component, have varying types; Power Transformers and Distribution Transformers. Both transformers have different in their purpose.

Power Transformer 

These are employed in power plants and transmission substations. Which serves the purpose of stepping up the voltage to ensure consistency of voltage through long range transmission. It increases or “steps-up” the voltage of generated electricity. It can travel through long transmission lines with consistent voltage and power. 

Distribution Transformer 

It is applied in distribution stations, industrial and home settings. It "steps-down" the voltage that the power transformer recently increased. Additionally, it is utilized in residences and other settings that use 230 volts or less.
